An annual street party will host a zipline at 30 feet above the mean streets of New York, at East 17th Street and Park Avenue South, and runs for 160 feet. Times NewsFeed indicates it is billed as the city’s biggest block party, in which seven miles of city streets are blocked off, from the Brooklyn Bridge all the way to 72nd Street; instead of being filled with gridlocked taxis, the roads will feature exhibitions and activities ranging from yoga to dance classes, a 25-foot climbing wall, and, of course, the zip line.

Satch Krantz, the zoo’s CEO, has been considering adding a canopy tour zip line for years. Initially worried about safety, he watched as hundreds of zip lines popped up all over the country without problems. Beanstalk Builders earned the contract to build the Riverbanks system, in part, because of their record for safe and environmentally friendly systems.

Riverbanks is spending about $250,000 on its canopy tours in an effort to continue expanding the ever-growing zoo experience. The trend that began a generation ago with a carousel and a playground took off last year with the opening of the Sky High Safari ropes course.

More than 48,000 people paid the extra fee ($7 per person, with discounts for zoo society members) to try the ropes course last year.
